Click on the character to discover what the quest is. You can either accept or decline. The more quests you complete, the more experience points you will receive. Experience points are what increases your levels.

Whatever you want a pet to do for your hunter, owls can do it. Even though it may not match pets that designed for a specific role, you will not find a pet that will give you better than that for multiple roles. Therefore, by far the wow best hunter pet is owl.

The best Middle-of-the-road pet is a wolf, who has the best ability: furious howl. Wolves are very fast. I have tried to train hyenas, carrion birds and other pets, but wolves dominate this category. So, if you need middle-of-the-road pet, wolf is the best choice.
